Question:

Creative ways of displaying a poisonous plant without it being open to cat chewing?

Hi. I would really like to have some plants in my house but the ones that I find most appealing are poisonous to cats. I have ten cats and no part of the house is off limits to them. My spider plant gets it's share of munching as it is. What can I do to keep them closed off? I was thinking about a terrarium or something similar, but it would have to be through light bulbs since windows are controlled by cats. Would that work out in a small mouthed jar so no one can get their paws in? I have a few ten gallon aquariums and a 2.5 gal that has a light in the hood. Would that sort of thing be my only option? I was eyeing some croton and nephthytis plants. Would those work out in that sort of setup? Thanks for any help or suggestions you can give.

  1. How about an old fashion macrame plant hanger or you could put in hanging basket and hang a hook up high.they make em with arms on them so you can hang above a window instead of ceiling

  3. hi, i think i am representing the voice of doom here.

No matter how carefully you do this, eventually one of your 10 cats will find a way to get into one of those enclosures, or a way to push one to the floor - where it will break open, etc.

Cats are curious, flexible, mobile - as you already know.

I just want you to understand that no system is going to perfectly protect the cats and allow you easy viewing of the plants.

So if you go ahead with this, consider clear plastics instead of glass - a terrarium made of Lexan or some other plastic that looks like glass will give more protection to the cats.

  4. you could put it in a glass case.
