Im just going into my second year at college doing English, Media and History, but I was wondering what I should do at uni. I like writing, and have done ever since I was like, but I dont think I'm very good at it...well not good enough to have a career out of it.

Ive wanted to write for magazines for awhile too, and I was just looking for some advice as to which one I should do/ persue? So creative writing or journalism?

  1. Of those two, Journalism will be better for applying for specific jobs. Have you looked into the Communications department?  My major is called Communications/English with a Journalism Emphasis, which i recently switched to from the English department. It's fantastic for magazine work, and encompasses Media as well; you can spec in Journalism, Rhetoric, Public Relations, or Audio/Visual production. Here's a link to my Comm department; yours will be different, but it's worth looking into. Also, switching from English to Comm is often seamless, since most of the required classes in one section will still be valid in the other:

This is called "What Can I Do With this Major?" and is extremely helpful:

You might also like adding a minor in Technical Writing, to make you VERY hireable while allowing you to study what you want to. The Tech Writing minor I did is at the bottom here, to give you an idea:

    Hope this helps!

  2. journalism, you will have more career options with that degree

  3. You could try and English with creative writing. Having the English Literature aspect will keep your options open.
