Credit Checks included in Background Check?

Question

Why are employers checking our credit when hiring? Is it to gauge our character? Do they think we'd steal something if our credit was less than stellar? I lost the opportunity for a job once because they claimed my credit was poor. Despite legitimate excuse, they didn't choose me. Can we get around this?

You can do your own check about yourself and yes your credit report is in there.

I was totally shocked that they had so much info on this person.  The website had all public info info including addresses, phone numbers, and criminal records.

There was also a listing for marriage certificates, bankruptcy, death records and a bunch of other stuff.
