Credit Score Lock / Block?

I saw article in a newspaper several months ago which indicated there was a way you could make your credit score private (block access to it - sort of like a non-listed phone number). Of course, it is unlikely that anyone would give you credit without access to your credit score but, assuming one is willing to survive without credit, is this possibe? How?

You can go to the 3 credit scoring companies and put a block on your credit for about $10 apiece.
