  1. Instead of using Credit cards, go for virtual debit cards being offered by various banks. For example, if u have a/c with HDFC Bank or Kotak mahindra bank, u can create a virtual credit card from funds of your own a/c. These cards have a max. validity of 48 hrs, and once used, cannot be used again. Moreover u can limit the amount u want to create it for.

For example amounts ranging anyware between Rs. 100/- to Rs. 50,000/-. Even Rs. 150/-.

You also get the CVC(pin) code alongwith. If u fail to use the card within 48 hours, it will lapse, and the funds will automatically get transferred back to your account. You can create as many as cards u may like, without any charge. Just check out the terms & policies of the bank for the same.

I have tried this a lot many times on Indian & International sites

  2. Well it can be used safly on most site but now a days bank also provide temporary Internet card and Internet Credit cards with lower limits for your protection I would prefer these.

  3. It's pretty safe as long as you are doing transactions on certified sites on your Home PC.

To get started, do a small transaction (under Rs100) with any of the famous shopping sites to get a feel of the entire process. You will find that your first time nervousness will go away fast :)

    Tips:

    1. Verify if the payment page is https:// - very important

    2. Look for the padlock icon in your browser, click on it to view the certificate.

    3. If you find the site design a bit crappy, with error pages, its better to refrain from transacting with those sites - they don't deserve your hard earned money anyways.

    4. Don't hit refresh, back or front button while the transaction is in progress

    5. Use a card which allows you to set a PIN or security question for online transactions. HSBC, Citi Bank, ICICI offer such cards

    6. Most importantly, DO NOT make any credit card transactions at public cyber cafes, You knever know what kind of malwares and keystroke snooping spywares infest those PC's - Better to be safe than sorry later.

  4. Following points should be considered while using credit cards on the internet

1)Make sure that the website payment as well as login page is hosted on secure server i.e using port 443 instead of port 80.For a layman webpage (applicable to login and payment page)address begins with https:// intead of http:// and a padlock icon will be shown on browser.

2)Do not make online transaction at cybercafe or friend's computer.

3)Net banking users should use virtual keyboard if provided by bank's site.

4)Should have installed good firewall, anti virus, anti spy softwares.

  5. Nowadays, it is safe to use credit card online, depending on the website.  For example, websites like amazon are good to use. However, it is always safer to make a transaction in person.  Just be  careful that you don't hit the enter button twice.
