Question:

Credit checks and job applications??

I recently applied for a job, and the application included a credit check form. I filled it out, had the interview, and was offered the job the next day. I know they have not checked my credit yet, will they? Has anyone lost a job offer because of credit?

  1. It depends on the company and the position you are applying for in the company. On average 1/3 of companies in America now check credit. It is typically to make sure you're resume matches. If you claim to have spent the last 2 years in TX for school, but your credit report shows you lived in the same state that you are in now, they may ask a few more questions. If you are a "high security" applicant they may be looking for your ability to handle all aspects of life.

Don't stress and congratulations. Collections is not what they're looking for.

    NOTE:

Very rarely will a check processing company report anything to your credit bureau. It would take a multitude of recurrences before they would do anything like that. Remember reporting credit costs money. Why would they do that to a customer that has already cost them a miniscule amount of money that they will hound you for before acts of desperation and credit reporting begins? Not trying to step on anyone's toes.

  2. First how do you know they haven't checked your credit yet?  I just heard on TV yesterday, where a lady applied for credit, and was declined do to her bad credit history.

  3. They most likely will check your credit, however they are usually only checking to see if you have written worthless checks in the past. If you have written checks to businesses in which the business could not collect on the check and if you were perhaps reported to "checksystems" or "vericheck" or another similar company, that may be on your credit report. Employers like to know how honest a person you are, and writing worthless checks is one way for a potential boss to know if you are trustworthy or not. Don't worry if all you have on your credit report is honest, legitimate debt (credit cards, unpaid utilities, late mortgage payments) they most likely aren't worried about that.

  4. I do know that some companys use this to rule out people with bad credit they see this as if you arent responsible enough to pay bills etc you will not make a good employee but if you already have the job you shouldnt have anything to worry about.
