On my credit report i have an old negative credit card account that is closed. It about 4 years old and if i call the original lender they say that they no longer of my account on file. Can i somehow dispute the account and have it taken off since they dont have me on file anymore?

  1. Accurate negative info can stay on your credit report for 7 years.....

Per the Fair Credit Reporting Act you have the right to request written validation of negative entries on your credit files. Per this law they must validate the item(s) or remove them from your credit file.

Mail a letter via certified mail with return receipt to all three credit bureaus (NOT the collection agency). Include a photocopy of your driver's license and social security card...If you don't include these, they may write back requesting them, which would slow the process down by several weeks. In your letter, simply state:

Per the Fair Credit Reporting Act, I am requesting written validation of this item.

They must either validate the item or remove it....

  2. You can contact the CRA (or all three if this appears on all your credit reports) and dispute the item.  However, just because the original creditor has no file on this, they may have sold the debt to a collections agency.

When you dispute with the CRA's, they will then notify the listing creditor and request verification of the debt, if they get it, then it will remain on your report, if they get no answer or no proof, then they will remove it and send you a corrected report.  They have to respond within 30 days.

The CRA's do have a specific way to dispute.  This is the way they prefer to do business and those online disputes usualy get a computer generated response with no results

Here is a link to download how to dispute with the CRA's from the government.

Download a pdf file regarding how to dispute with CRA's

I have used their guidlines with good results for years now and it allways works the best.

    Hope this answers your question

  3. Absolutely. Dispute the tradeline directly with the credit bureaus.
