I recently had a interview at a bank, barclaycard. At the end of my interview i was told i was successful in getting the job. After i left i had a voicemail from someone that worked there, saying i needed more proof of address to do my credit checks. I am only 16, but my mum has messed up my credit rating from using my name. Can this afect me?

  1. Explain this to the employer.  Do they even know you are 16?  Sixteen year olds shouldn't even have a credit report so I don't understand why they are doing one.  You cannot legally enter into a credit agreement until you are 18.  Also, there is a difference in using a name and a social security number.  Was your mother using your social security number as well?  I hope that she has changed her ways and realizes what she is doing is a felony and she can go to jail for it.

  2. It could.   If your mom legitimate messed up your credit and a bank runs a credit check and it shows up a bunch of bad financial practices they probably will not hire  you.   They would consider you a big risk.

If these were truly things your mom did, you should immediately file disputes for everything on your credit report that she did.   You can look up free copies of your credit report and file disputes online at www.annualcreditreport.com.

Now ... once you've filed the disputes ... I'd be proactive with your potential employer.  Give them what they ask ... but since you know they are going to run your reports, explain to the hiring manager that there are inconsistencies in your reports due to your mom and that you are actively working to get them corrected and removed.   That MAY help you to get the job under a probation status.

If you do get the job (and actually even if you don't because this could come up again) agressively work to correct the errors in your reports!
