Question:

Creeping jenny / goldilock life span?

I just started gardening in pots a few months ago. I love it. At the begining of summer I bought a small creeping jenny plant and now it has long beautiful tendrils spilling over my pot. My question is how do I keep this plant going through winter so that after several years it is profuse?

  1. Creeping Jenny makes an excellent aquarium plant if it will grow in the aquarium I would think you can grow it in your house. Outside it grows best in shade, even deep shade.  If you do move it inside keep in in a moist area like maybe a kitchen or bathroom window., It is worth a try.

Make sure you water it at least once a week.

Creeping Jenny is a perenial zone 4-8 you can winter them over outside if they are planted in very large pots or in the ground.

  2. It'll be difficult to keep "Creeping Jenny" growing well in a pot.By it's nature it increases through the tendrils rooting and spreading where they touch the soil.

Try placing several small pots around the parent plant, lightly peg the ends of the tendrils in the compost in each pot.

    When growth starts,sever the tendril,to .

    produce more plants

    Best solution I can suggest!

  3. I love the Goldilock cultivar of creeping jenny.  I've had it overwinter in pots outside just fine, and my winters can get to -25F.  It's a tough plant, and can become really invasive if you let it go.  Mine has started to sprout in a number of spots in my lawn.  If it's happy it will send out a mess of little yellowish flowers, but they are rather lost in the leaves. As for lifespan, it seems to live forever with little care, mine is 4 or 5 years old I think.

You can leave it in the pot it's in for the winter if you so choose, it should be fine.  You can also try starting new plants, by taking cuttings, planting them, and growing new plants.  It spreads readily from cuttings (which is why the lawnmower did so great at spreading it around my lawn).

It will be profuse well before a few years.  Creeping Jenny is considered invasive, in all its color incarnations.
