  1. When the ancients burned their dead. But modern day, I think it was a 20th century thing.


  2. Legally, 1885:  On 26 March 1885,  Mrs. Jeannette C. Pickersgill was cremated in Woking.  Three persons were cremated in 1885; in 1886 ten bodies were cremated.  

    However, the first recorded illegal cremation took place--other than burning heretics at the stake--on 26 September 1769 when the body of Honoretta Pratt, the daughter of Sir John Brookes of York, was illegal burned in an open grave at St. George's Burial Ground, London.

    Approximately 71 percent of the British population now accepts cremation perhaps because the average cost of a cremation funeral costs 1,215 pounds while the cost of a burial averages 2,048 pounds.

    Here in Nottingham the first Cremation took place at the Wilford Hill Crematorium, in March 1919.
