  1. I've used peroxide and baking soda for years. It whitens teeth. It is what is in some toothpastes now. The health risks are only apparent if you're in the habit of swallowing the stuff. The directions on the White Strips tell you to watch certain conditions of your teeth before you use it.

  2. I can tell you that my teeth got more sensitive to heat and cold when I used the crest white strips.  Also, it's impossible to just put the white strips on just your teeth and be able to cover your entire tooth so part of the strip will be touching your gums.  On me, it hurt!  Plus, my gums were lighter where the strips touched.  It wasn't permanent but it did take a few hours to disappear.  The strips also had a very nasty taste.

I have used peroxide and baking soda and prefer it to the white strips.  First of all, it's a lot cheaper!  Plus, there's no walking around waiting for the strips to dissolve.  (It took way longer than the box said for them to dissolve on me.)  I know you shouldn't swallow the peroxide or the baking soda but I don't believe that there's any health risks.  If you're really concerned, call your dentist and ask!
