I bought a red bulb not specifically made for reptiles. I would like to watch my crested gecko at night without disturbing him with light, and I am pretty sure they cant see the red light. anyway, it is not specifically made for reptiles, will it still work? and can they see the red light?

  1. Well, if it's not for reptiles, then I wouldn't try it. But, a Purple UV light would be okay. You can get them at the Pet store. The gecko mostly will not see the red light, though I warn you, usually red lights are mainly for humans. Red lights are for tanning and are also used to relieve aches and pains.

  2. The color won't be the problem here, but heat could be.  As long as you're using it only for short periods of time, the heat shouldn't be an issue.  Also, the issue with red party bulbs is that they are just painted red, so they don't emit the same spectrum as a reptile bulb, which has red glass.  I'd suggest getting a real reptile bulb as the spectrum is going to be slightly different and not as bright, so it won't bother their eyes.

  3. I reccomend you to buy a reptile light

  4. here is a fact.  nocturnal reptiles and do not see into the red spectrum of light. so if the bulb (incandescent)only emits red light it is fine for night viewing. another fact is reptiles see in to the UV spectrum, soooo if you use a black UV light to see your pet at night your doing something bad/stressful to the animal. there is never UV rays during the night.remember keeping & studying teaches in this hobby. just studying academic papers(care sheets) does not.
