Question:

Crete - Day Excursions to Other Greek Islands?

I am going to Crete in September and staying in Hirsonissos.

I have heard that you can make a day trip to other islands (Santorini?) although it takes 3 hours each way.

Can anyone confirm if this is true? I appreciate there will be ferries to other islands but due to Crete's location they are some distance away so I would only be interested in a day trip.

  1. Hi,

    I just found this:

    From HERAKLION to Santorini:

By Catamaran: (passengers only, no cars)

    •   Hellenic Seaways-Flying Cat 4, in 1 hour and 45 minutes. Daily (except some Wednesdays). This is the fastest way. The catamaran leaves at 09:45 and returns at 19:25 (SUMMER only) > Jump to schedule & more details

    •   Sea Jets-SuperJet/MegaJet, in about 2 hours. Daily in the summer. The MegaJet takes cars too > Jump to schedule & more details

    •   GA Ferries-Daliana or Dimitroula ferry, in about 4.5 hours. These are "classic" type older ferries, with a long route and many stops, so dates & times are not so convenient. But if you are coming from another island, or want to board with your car, this route may be helpful (SUMMER only) > Jump to schedule & more details

Try googling around for "Crete ferries" or "Greek Ferries".  I know if it is very confusing (there are many sites).  What I do is to try to find the names of the ferry lines that operate the routes from the "junk sites" and then to find the ferry operator's direct site.  Minoan lines is a major operator and probably is a good choice.

Definitely op for the "cat" or high speed ferries if available...
