  1. I'm 6'0", and weighed 145 in college.  They discouraged me from rowing, but I ignored them.  My best friend in hgh school was 6'3" and 190, and he said with my strength and speed I should try it. I did, and loved it.  If you are strong and fit, you'll move the boat well.

Biceps are almost unimportant.  Its legs, glutes, and lat strength.

Big guys make the boat low in the water and slow it down.  They have to be strong to overcome their size disadvantage

  2. Show up to practice and give it a shot.  I'm not the tallest guy in the world, 5'8. and I got 6th place at Scholastic rowing nationals in a double, so i'm guessing you have a decent shot.

  3. I'm 5'3" and on a girls' varsity team. I sit bow seat in the first jr. 8+. If you're short and technical, you'll do fine. If you're tall and strong, you'll also do fine. Rowing seeks power without weight, because heavier rowers weigh down the boat and make it slower, necessitating a harder pull to move the boat fast and usually heavier oars to create more drag. I'm easily one of the weakest in the boat, but I've been told I have great balance. Stroke, 7, 2, and bow in an eight are the technical rowers. (Stroke and bow in a four, scullers have to be good all around).

Go for it; there's a place for everyone on a crew. Also - don't be so quick to knock coxing. I coxed over the summer to help with the novice team and it was a lot of fun.

    Best of luck. :)
