Question:

Crib bumper or not....

My daughter is 9mos old and I'm not sure if it's time to remove her bumper out of the crib. I'm concerned because I see her trying to use the bumper to pull herself up to her feet. On the other hand I have seen her loose balance and bump her head on the frame of the crib when we tried removing it. How old should a baby be when you remove the bumper?

  1. My daughter is four months old and I never put a bumper in her crib to begin with because of the suffocation hazard. I'd suggest you go ahead and remove it. Babies will bounce around in their cribs and your daughter may bonk her head but it won't be nearly as bad as if she got caught in it and had trouble breathing. It's more for decoration than anything else and I think it's time to take it out now that she's mobile.

  2. I removed my son's bumper at 8 months because he was trying to use it for leverage to JUMP OUT.

I think that the bumper isn't enough 'padding' to really protect their head anyway..

Once the baby is 8 months + and can try to pull themselves out, the bumper is pointless. When your baby starts crawling and walking they're going to bump their head on things a lot harder than the inside of the crib.

I think you should remove the bumper..

  3. I never removed mine... it was never an issue.

  4. Children strangle on their crib bumpers every year in this country. I lived in Europe for a while and nobody used them there and their kids weren't any worse for the wear. Google,"strangled by crib bumper", and you'll find plenty of articles and information about that. They aren't safe and no one should use them.

  5. My son is 7 months old and my doctor today told me to move it out! She said he will use it to pull himself up. He is already tearing it down. I would just movie it :)

  6. As soon as your child starts trying to use the bumper to stand up it needs to be removed.  Her bumping her head on the bars isn't as dangerous as her climbing on the bumpers and falling out of the crib.

  7. Definitely take it out as soon as they start using it as an escape route! and make sure your crib is on the lowest setting to the floor- if it's adjustable.

  8. Actually, my son is only 4 months old and the ped said I should remove the bumper now.

  9. yet another difference in what we are told... I was told NEVER to use bumpers as they provide a suffocation risk if the baby rolls it's face into them.

  10. Take it off...a bump on the head from the frame of the crib is nothing compared to a broken neck from climbing up on the bumper and falling out of the crib!
