Cribnote after an eternity comes back to life after being bogged down by injuries and a rare disease, to start again as a 5-year-old
After a 1,050-day layoff, nearly three years, the Richard A. Violette trained 5-year-old gelding, Cribnote, returned to the races at Saratoga in an allowance race at about 6 furlongs on 20 August, 2011, under jockey Rajiv Maragh.
The son of Read the Footnotes, out of Totebook by Notebook, Cribnote ran his eyes out in his comeback race and finished third, only to be beaten by a length, as he finished behind the winner, Green Monster, and runner-up, Ground Force.
In the three allowance races highlight at Belmont Park on 29, September, Cribnote will run his second race in the $42,000 opener. The race is first level sprint, exclusively for New York breds.
Cribnote has been extremely unlucky with injuries and peculiar diseases, as the gelding, with a promising start to his career, underwent a knee surgery, and then diagnosed with a rare disease which wouldn’t let him assimilate sugar and starch.
As a 2-year-old, Cribnote participated in the Grade 1 Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga on 1 September, 2008, under jockey Rajiv Maragh, over a distance of 7 furlongs.
Cribnote turned in a promising race where he was close to winning but got shutdown by Vineyard Haven in the final yards of the race as he finished second.
Next up he represented his connections in the Grade 1 Champagne Stakes, at about a mile over the Belmont Park’s dirt track on 4 October, 2008, as Vineyard Haven again landed the Grade 1 event, leaving Cribnote to finish third behind the runner-up, Munnings.
Cribnote fought with his knee problems and his disease. Now his knee is healed and being on a special hi-fat diet, Cribnote is ready to make a serious comeback to races.
From being sidelined and forced to be a show horse, it seems Cribnote always wanted to be a race horse, and he can do that when he faces six rivals at Belmont Park on 29 September.
Cribnote faces his Saratoga rival, Ground Force, who edged past him in the spa to finish second in a close race.
