Cricket Australia to investigate Ashes debacle
Australian cricket is all set to undergo an overhaul as Cricket Australia is expected to launch a review of the poor 2010-11 Ashes campaign, while making radical changes in the domestic circuit on Tuesday.
“That’s right across Australian cricket, right across all the states, from the point where emerging talent is identified through the nurturing of that talent,” Peter Young, Cricket Australia’s spokesman, told the media.
He stated that Cricket http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 is keen to examine everything that contributed to the Ashes loss. He also added that the Board will deliberate on the process that the selection committee adopts while selecting players.
The meeting will be held in Melbourne on Tuesday where the Board is also likely to decide on the eight new teams that will take part in the expanded version of the Big Bash tournament to be held in 2012. Traditionally, the state sides take part in the league
but the changes might include city-based teams.
However, the focus of the meeting will be to ponder upon the reasons behind the embarrassing Ashes debacle that saw Australia slump to three innings defeats against England in December-January 2010-11.
Young conceded that the review is likely to be headed by an independent review committee so that all the aspects are examined.
“The objective is to understand what we need to understand to ensure we’re in a winning position when we next play the Ashes and when we host the 2015 World Cup,” Young said.
He also added that while the long format of the game will be highly prioritised, immediate decisions will be taken for the shorter form of the game. The Board is all set to decide on which city-based teams will take part in the revamped edition of the domestic
Twenty20 tournament.
Recently, Test captain Ricky Ponting also called for the ‘whole structure of Australian cricket’ to be reviewed. He believed that the standard of the domestic structure in the country had resulted in the Ashes loss.
