Cricket Australia undergoes historic overhaul - Cricket News Update
At an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) held in Melbourne, the directors of Cricket Australia (CA) have voted themselves out in a bid to formally announce a more compact, nine-person CA board, subject to an approval at the next annual general meeting due
to be held in October, hoping to appoint three additional independent directors.
The decision followed the recommendations by Colin Carter and David Crawford, cited in their Australian cricket governance review, which suggested reducing the number of directors in the board from 14 to 9.
The six states represented by their respective representatives decided to disband the old administrative structure in order to streamline the existing one, which will ultimately be represented by nine independent directors - CA Chairman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Walter-John-Edwards-c96055 hailed
it as the biggest change for the governance of Australian cricket in over a century.
CA was founded in 1905 and traditionally, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-South-Wales-c823 and Victoria have held sway over other states in decision making. However, the enforcement of the new structure would ensure that every state would have one vote each at the board
table.
"Australian cricket needs a governance that the modern sport deserves as a highly-professional, major player in the global sport and entertainment arena," Edwards said.
"We are no longer a group of stand-alone states seeking to collectively organise international cricket matches - we are increasingly thinking and acting as one unified national sport facing increasing competition for the public's attention and support."
The lone opposition to the reforms came from South http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ian-Murray-McLachlan-c63926, the President of South Australia Cricket
Association (SACA),  said that there is still room for discussion.
"The time has come to cut the size of the CA Board and to bring in outside directors," McLachlan said. "There are still some matters requiring further detail and these will be handled by the states during the next few weeks," Lachlan said.
As a confidence building measure, the board approved all six current directors to serve an initial term, including the chairman Edwards (http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Queensland-c834), Dr Harrry
Harinath (NSW) and Tony Harrison (http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Tasmania-c854).
