Cricket captaincy is considered as the art of controlling nerves and possessing the expertise to implement things with a positive approach. Cricket is a sport where the verdicts of the captain can be decisive and indispensable to the success of the team.
The influence of the captain in cricket is more reflective and active than other sports.
A cricket captain should have exceptional qualities to be successful. Skippers should have massive knowledge of the game and should be aware of its tactics.
A good cricket captain is the individual who knows his teammates according to their potency and flaws to get the best out of them; he needs to be able to deal with pressure and has leadership qualities to escort the team.
The Captain needs to lead his team from the front by performing well himself to motivate his team. The skipper must contain charismatic traits in his personality because charisma is a conceptual excellence of a leader that can
attract and impress others.
He is liable to motivate his players on and off the field because motivation is the certain factor to boost the morale of the team and to enable the team spirit.
It is very important for a skipper to have pre and post match communication with all the players and management to discuss strategies, plans and tactics. He needs to be a good listener to get inputs from team and he should appreciate
impressive thoughts. The skipper is responsible to keep every single member of his team engaged; this will set up a healthy and stress free environment in team.
Team bonding and working together is a core principle to achieve positive results. So it is important for the Captain to encourage players to think as a team. The skipper needs to arrange team outings apart from cricketing matters,
if players can improve their relationships off the field, they will be far more likely to work together on the field.
The leader of the cricket team should restrain brilliant decision making skills to execute plans according to situation and requirement of the match. He must give esteem to senior folks of the team by keeping them along while taking
vital decisions and he needs to make youngsters feel important part of the team so that perfect combination can be constructed.
The Captain of a side should know how to interact with the media because whatever the captain is going to say will demonstrate the morale, spirit and atmosphere of the team.
He must take the initiative to maintain the fitness level of players with the coordination of team management. The leader of the team is also responsible for promoting and endorsing disciplinary procedures within the team. He has
to make sure that everyone in his side is respecting ICC's code of conduct. He needs to be a high-quality intellectual with the attitude of applying things logically and systematically.
Lastly, and most importantly, a captain is supposed to have nerves of steel, positive, aggressive and resilient approach, act like a role model, shouldn’t be afraid of losing the match and he must possess the will to win.
