Cricket: Imran Khan inducted into ICC Hall of Fame
Imran Khan is without doubt one the best cricketers Pakistan has produced. He is highly credited for winning Pakistan a World Cup as Captain of his team. Imran Khan becomes the fourth Pakistani to be inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame. I achieved many things during my cricketing career, including winning a World Cup in 1992, but to be named amongst the initial 55 inductees, alongside Hanif and Javed makes me very proud".
The genuine all rounder played 88 test matches and 175 ODI’s for his country. He retired at the age of 39 after winning his country the 1992 World Cup. Imran picked up 362 wickets in test cricket while he had an impressive batting average of 37.69 as a number seven batsman. Imran Khan was born on 25th November 1952 in Lahore, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Imran-c64193 says: "When I became the cricket captain, I couldn’t speak to the team directly I was so shy. I had to tell the manager, I said listen can you talk to them, this is what I want to convey to the team”.
Khan is highly respected for his social work in Pakistan. After retiring from cricket, Imran formed a charity hospital named Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust. The hospital to date provides patients with 75 percent free care. In 2008 Khan inaugurated another charitable project in the form of Namal College, an associate college of University of Bradford. Khan has continued his social work and is currently working on another cancer hospital in Karachi.
Also, Khan is currently running a political party with the name of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf. He has not seen much success in politics compared with his success in other fields. He was once part of parliament after winning a seat from his home town Mianwali.
Apart from being in the ICC Hall Of Fame, Khan to his credit has earned a number of awards and honours. In 1983 he received the President’s Pride of Performance award. After his 1992 World Cup victory he was awarded Hilal-i-Imtiaz by the Pakistani government. He was also inducted in Oxford’s Hall Of Fame and was made an honorary fellow of Oxford Keble College. In 2005 Imran was appointed fifth Chancellor of the University Bradford, UK.
Imran Khan occasionally contributes to different newspapers and editorials. He is frequently seen on different talk shows giving his party’s political point of view. Khan has also written nonfiction books including an autobiography.
In 1995 Khan was married to English socialite Jemima Goldsmith who converted to Islam and changed her name to Jemima Khan. In 2004 Imran announced his divorce, giving the reason that it was difficult for Jemima to adapt a completely different life style of Pakistan. The tough marriage produced two sons Qasim and Sulaiman.
Imran continues to achieve great laurels for his country. His work as a cricketer and philanthropist has made him a popular figure in Pakistan. Currently Khan resides in Bani Gala, Islamabad and is fully concentrating on his political career.
