Cricket News: Sachin Tendulkar narrowly escapes injury
During the Indian team’s training session on Thursday to prepare for its upcoming series against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757, a whiplash bouncer from right-arm fast-bowler Umesh Yadav caught Sachin Tendulkar by surprise and hit the legendary
batsman’s helmet. Fortunately, Tendulkar was unhurt and soon resumed practicing at the Claremont Cricket Club.
Tendulkar inadvertently ducked into the bouncer instead of away from it, probably because he expected the cracking delivery to go over his head. The blow took him by surprise, but he remained quite calm – although the very audible
clang of the ball as it made contact with his helmet had indeed caused his teammates quite some alarm. Tendulkar, however, simply took off his helmet and examined it, as a panicked Yadav ran across the pitch to see what damage had been done. He breathed a
sigh of relief when he saw there was no apparent injury.
Tendulkar wasted no time before resuming practice. Shortly after the incident, Sreesanth delivered a short ball which barely rose to the diminutive batting legend’s knees, eliciting laughter from his teammates.
The pitch at Gary Kirsten’s cricket academy was prepared specially to help the Indian team get accustomed to South African conditions. Kirsten, who is coach of the Indian team, said, “You can’t control these sorts of situations
in a net environment. It even happens in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750; guys get hit on the glove and so on. You just have to hope nothing too serious occurs.”
"Interestingly enough the one net here is pretty flat and low and the other is going around a bit,” he added. “The guys wanted to use the one that was more (spicy). I'm pretty excited about that; we'll use the one that’s going
around a bit again tomorrow."
India’s first Test against South Africa will be played on December 16 at the Centurion, as part of a three-Test series.
