IPL ratings are a source of concern for Punitha Arumugam, World Cup highlighted as reason - Cricket News
Latest data released by Television Audience Measurement sports indicates that television viewership for the fourth season of the Indian Premier League is continuing to drop when compared to previous three editions.
Speaking to a press conference, the Chief Executive Officer of Madison Media, Punitha Arumugam confessed, ‘Yes, the IPL ratings are a source of concern. Even the ratings on weekends have dropped.’
TVR ratings have fallen from the 5.52 average of the third season of the IPL, to an alarming average of 4.30, so far this season.
The move to include two more teams to the IPL roster was expected to make the tournament bigger and more appealing to the public, but the opposite effect seems to have taken place.
Lower ratings will affect broadcasting company SET MAX’s sway in their ability to charge a premium for advertising deals, as the season wears on. That in turn would reduce the amount of revenue earned by the multi-million dollar venture.
Sighting the nations’ triumph in the ICC World Cup as one of the reasons for the slump in ratings, Arumugam speculated that the amount of cricket that had taken place in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 over the past few months may have burnt out fans of the game.
Arumugam added, ‘Winning the World Cup was the highest point or say the peak for an Indian cricket fan, so I feel IPL turned out to be a low.’
However, the CEO remained confident that Television Viewer Ratings would get back to their IPL standard of previous seasons, as the league is nearing its’ climax. He added, “But at the same time we feel as the time goes by the ratings will pick up.”
Arumugam’s optimism was shared by Ignitee Sports President, Anand Yalvigi, who believed that fans were slowly beginning to shift to IPL, as the high from the World Cup began to settle.
Yalvigi added, “The viewership has gone down but we can still see stadiums full in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mumbai-c820 and Kolkata. I feel the viewership will pick up. In fact, it has started picking up and will bounce back in a week or two. The Cup fever is dying and IPL fever is seeping
in."
India won the ICC World Cup 2011 in front of a packed Wankhede Stadium after beating http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 in the final. Millions tuned in to watch the match in an exciting contest.
It seems that IPL is failing to match the high that winning the World Cup final gave, which has resulted in fewer viewers tuning in to watch their local sides battle it out on the field.
