Cricket: Northamptonshire thrash Derbyshire in T20 tournament
Northamptonshire beat Derbyshire by 43 runs in Friends Provident T-20 cricket tournament at County Ground, Derby. Derbyshire won the toss and elected to bowl first as they knew the home conditions better and thought they would be able to restrict the visitors to a modest target.

Derbyshire did give away at least 20 to 30 extra runs in the end. Chasing a target, Derbyshire could not establish a single solid partnership and kept losing wickets one after another, and were finally bowled out in the 2nd last over for 116 and fell 43 runs short.

Vaas on the other hand found the moving ball hard to handle. He was dismissed for just 4 runs, but it was not the swing that got him. A suicidal run out led to his wicket.
White also fell after scoring 20 runs from 23 balls with 3 fours; he was caught by Smith off the bowling of Groenewald.
Wakely and Sales put together a good 2nd wicket stand and started piling up the runs at a good rate. The pair added 59 runs before Sales was cleaned up by Park after scoring 39 runs from 23 balls with 2 fours and 3 sixes.
Wakely at the other end added a few more runs before he was caught and bowled by Smith. Wakely scored 29 runs from 29 balls with 2 boundaries.

Chigumbura was unbeaten in the end at 35 from 25 balls with 1 four and a six, and Hall was not out on 22 from 17 balls with one four. Northamptonshire ended their innings at 159 for the loss of 4 wickets in the allotted 20 overs.
The target was not a huge one but the home side was facing a run rate of 8 runs per over right from the start. South African opener Loots Bosman who is also known as the hammer smashed 3 quick boundaries before Vaas got one to move off the seam and he was caught at extra cover by Chigumbura. Bosman scored 15 runs from 15 balls with 3 fours.
Next man in, Smith did not last long and was caught by Middlebrook, off the bowling of Brooks for just 2 runs from 7 balls.
The trend continued as wickets kept tumbling after regular intervals. Opener Durston was next to go, as he was caught by Wiley off the bowling of Chigumbura after scoring 18 runs from 27 balls with just one four.
Chigumbura after his impressive batting display continued the good work with the bat and got his 2nd wicket, Madsen was caught by Vaas off the bowling of Chigumbura.
The next 4 batsmen did not even manage to get into double figures and left for scores of 2, 1, 9 and 5 respectively. Jones with 26 was the lone ranger but had no support from the other end. Jones was unbeaten in the end, as Derbyshire were all out for just 116 on the 5th ball of 19th over.
