The National Coach lauded his brilliant match winning performance as he said that at one stage it seemed to be quite difficult to win the game. But the way Umar played an astounding innings of 64 runs was outstanding. The former fast bowler said that the young guy is just 20 but he plays an astoundingly mature innings. Waqar anticipated that undoubtedly the emerging talent of youngest Akmal would reach the top.
"He's just amazing. He's only young, he's only 20. He's got heaps of time and he's a good learner, a good listener which is good. I have no doubt that he is going to go right to the top. He's very talented. Time will teach him more and he'll be right up there at the top. He's fabulous to have in the side".

His half century, he chalked off just 21 balls, is the fastest T20 international fifty recorded by any Pakistani player till date. What made Umar’s 64 runs even better was that his innings came out when the Pakistani side was in a precarious condition after losing its early four wickets at the score of just 47. 20-year old Akmal’s bold and fearless hitting helped his side set an imposing target of 168. His brilliant performance earned him the man of the match title in the end. Akmal in St Lucia as well played a remarkable innings of an unbeaten 56 runs.
