Former South African opening batsman Herschelle Gibbs has received an apology from Cricket South Africa (CSA), after the CSA apparently made Gibbs’ contract termination public, before consulting him.
Earlier the CSA had announced that Gibbs’ contract had been terminated by an agreement, which was mutual between the two parties. However, it was later revealed by Gibbs’ lawyer Peter Whelan that it was not a mutual decision, and he was hoping to have a
meeting with the officials of the CSA about this issue.
After his meeting with the CSA members, Whelan confirmed that the contract had been terminated. The lawyer said, “Herschelle had a settlement with CSA, the terms of which are confidential. We can say that there was no bad faith from CSA. It was in everybody's
interests."
The 36-year-old Gibbs is said to have angered the CSA, after criticising the South African players and management in his autobiography ‘To the point.’ The board is said to have consulted its legal advisors to see whether Gibbs had violated the terms of his
contract by making such revelations in the controversial autobiography.
However Whelan rubbished the claims, calling them nothing more than mere rumours. According to the lawyer, the CSA has not terminated Gibbs contract because of his autobiography. No one from CSA has confirmed or denied Whelan’s claims so far.
In his book, Gibbs made some shocking disclosers about the sexual escapades of the South African team, especially during the Australian tour of 1997-98. He also called former national coach http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mickey-Arthur-c1969 as a puppet, who was influenced by the people around
him. Gibbs has heavily criticised fellow players Graeme Smith, Jacques Kallis, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/AB-de-Villiers-c887 and Mark Boucher as having a strong hold on the team, and dictating their terms to the national squad.
Graeme Smith has shown his utter disappointment at Gibbs’ claims; however none of the players has said anything against their former squad member. The board was also silent, and did not release any statements when the startling revelations were first made
public.
CSA has been very careful in dealing with the matter, so that things don’t get ugly between the cricket association and Gibbs. As of now the matter has been resolved amicably, and Herschelle Gibbs and Cricket South Africa are on friendly terms.
