Cricket Special Report: Captaincy in Modern Cricket
Captaincy in cricket is the most important of all the sports. A cricket captain should be flexible, tactically well equipped and imaginative.
A cricket captain has much more responsibilities than the other members of the team. All the decisions on the field are taken by the captain of the side. The captain sets field for his bowlers, and works out an opposition batsman. He decides when to take
power play. He has to decide what to do against which batsman. It is how he rotates his bowlers. Bat first or 2nd when the toss is being won.
Sometimes a bowler is bowling really well. He has taken 4 or 5 wickets. Now a captain should decide whether to bowl his overs straight away or preserve some of his overs in the later part of the innings. A captain can save his overs or he can really go for
the kill.
The best way to asses a captain is to see his on the field tactics. The moves that a captain makes should be logical in accordance to the situation. If the captain’s tactics are in pattern with the situation and the batsman then he is on the right move.
Some plans will work for a single batsman, but might not work for others. There should be a different plan for different batsman. Every batsman has his own style of play. You will not even see a stereotype plan working for the same batsman, every time.
Modern day captains surf so much time in planning before the match. Sometimes the batsman and the situation play differently. The captains do not move accordingly to the situation, but to a plan made before the match. There should be a gut feeling when something
different happens. If the plan against a batsman is not working then the captain should quickly adapt to the situation. He should change his game plan.
The great test captains always anticipate. They have a gut feeling when in a tough situation. They have answers to the questions, in almost any of the circumstances they face, during a cricket match. The best part about their captaincy is imagination. They
prepare well, but can really change the course of the match by their on the field thinking.
We have to take a look at the current crop of good test captains. Currently 3 of the best test teams will be on show. India will take on Australia, and England will be touring Australia to take part in the Ashes later, this November. These two series will
reveal who is the better captain of all.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750, the number 1 ranked test team in the world has been well lead by Dhoni. Dhoni is bit of a gambler. He is the most aggressive captain around, both tactically and technically. The Indian bowling attack has been on a declining side from the last couple
of months. Dhoni still brings the best out of his bowling attack. The upcoming series against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 in October will be test for Dhoni with this bowling attack. India’s fate will depend on how well they bowl in the series, and how Dhoni captains his side.
English cricket team has been the most inform side this Year. This has been the best England side in the last 10 or 15 years. Andrew Strauss and his team have played most of their cricket in England this year. Conditions in England suit their bowling. They
say this attack bowls well when it is moving. It was seen at the Oval against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755, when the conditions were flat, Strauss only looked at Swann to give him breakthroughs. The conditions in Australia are different, it does not move in the air. Strauss and
his attack should be more adaptable in Australia. If they miss a trick in Australia, they might struggle.
Ricky Ponting sometimes, becomes conservative, but when the chips are really down, he goes for an all-out attack. It was seen in the match against Pakistan at the SCG. Australia pulled of a remarkable victory.
The captain who will be more adaptable and flexible will certainly steal the show with his magic.
