Cricket Update: Ashes 2010- England off to a brilliant start at Perth Post tea session Day 1
England has continued its dominance of the ongoing Ashes series as their pace attack rips apart the Australian top order on day one of the Perth test match.
The test which is virtually a do-or die one for the hosts started disastrously for them with the top order blown away in a matter of an hour.
Left handed opener Phil Hughes who replaced Simon Katich was sent packing by the right armer Chris Tremlett who replaced Stuart Broad in the English line-up.
Hughes failed to read a fast swinging yorker that went through his defences to rattle the stumps, he scored a mere 2 runs in his comeback game.
The Aussies were relying on the experience and class of Ricky Ponting to put them in the right frame of mind for the game. Punter started aggressively spanking three boundaries off his first 9 balls yet it all went pear shape for him from there as he edged
a rising delivery from James Anderson towards the slips where Paul Collingwood took a brilliant diving catch.
Ponting’s wretched form continued as he contributed a mere 12 runs, the scoreboard gave a sorry look when Michael http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Clarke-c51120 was sent packing by Tremlett for 4 runs. The Aussie vice-captain poked at a delivery that left him a touch and only succeeded in edging
it behind the stumps to wicket-keeper Matt Prior.
Tremlett was having a ball at this stage, the gigantic fast bowler extracted pace and bounce off the track and made the ball jump of a good length.
His bowling partner Steve Finn joined the party when he trapped the obdurate opening batsman Shane http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Watson-c96326 with a full swinging delivery that rapped him low on the pads in front of the stumps.
Watson scored 13 runs in his stay at the wicket hitting one four in the process, the Aussies took lunch with four wickets down.
After the break, spinning all-rounder Steven Smith who was brought in to replace Xavier Doherty in the test fell to Tremlett. He was snapped in the slips by Andrew Strauss for 7 runs.
Mike Hussey carried on his good form posting his third successive half century he remained resolute amid the carnage at the other end, however his resistance was ended by Graeme Swann who had him caught behind for 61 runs.
Brad Haddin and Mitchell Johnson took the hosts to tea with an attacking partnership that has thus far yielded 42 runs.
Haddin has already posted his second half century of the series; he also scored a hundred in the first innings at Gabba.
