Cricket Update: Chaminda Vaas announces retirement from the ODI and T20 cricket
Sri Lanka veteran fast bowler, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Chaminda-Vaas-c1223 has announced that he will be retiring from One-Day International (ODI) and Twenty20 cricket at the end of the World Cup 2011.
The 36-years old pace bowler was first included in the 30-member squad of ICC World Cup 2011 but he along with Sanath Jayasuriya remained unable to find a place in the final squad of 15, despite expressing their wish of playing a final World Cup before their
retirement. However, none of them have appeared in an ODI for Sri Lanka for over a year and chances of their placement in final squad were already less.
Both the senior legends of Sri Lanka had been team-mates of Arvinda de Silva, and trio had also been the key players of the team that won the 1996 World Cup, which was the last, arranged in the subcontinent.
De Silva, who is now the chairman of selectors, explaining the reason of the exclusion of these two players, said that the final squad was chosen after considering all the options to select the best possible 15 for the World Cup 2011 starting next month.
Vaas, who has been the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758’s most successful fast bowler, has played 111 Test matches and 322 ODIs. He announced his retirement from Test cricket in 2009. While giving views on his exclusion from the final squad of World Cup he said that as it was
going to be the last World Cup of his career, he was preparing well for it. He added that he was bowling well in the present context and in his opinion, the Premier League performance was good enough a platform.
“Yet, they now have selected the best fifteen as how they feel and I will go by that,”
said Vass.
He expresses his good wishes for the Sri Lankan team and hoped that the team would bring home the World Cup as they did in 1996. While telling about his future plans, Vass said:
“I have a six month stint with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Northamptonshire-c824 and also may be the IPL. For myself I see no further international that would come my way and I will announce my retirement at the end of the 2011 World Cup”.
