Cricket Update: County Championship Division Two- Surrey Vs Middlesex, Day 1 review

Mark Ramprakash was the leading run scorer from Surrey with 44 off 71 balls, followed by Matthew Spriegel’s 25 runs from 41 deliveries. Tim Murtagh was marvellous with the ball, as he took 5 opposition wickets giving away only 52 runs during 14.3 overs. Pedro Collins well supported Murtagh in his assault taking four crucial wickets of Surrey.
After winning the toss, Hamilton-Brown decided to bat first - a decision upon which he regretted end of the day. The openers, Tom Lancefield and Steve Davies took the side to a patient start, as is the requirement of four-day game, scoring 39 runs from the first 12 overs. The wicketkeeper batsman Steve Davies departed on the first ball of 13th over when Murtagh bowled him. Davies scored 24 runs off 41 balls. His 49 minutes innings also included three boundaries. Usman Afzaal and the fluent Ramprakash took the initiative of bringing the side out of plunging conditions but both could post only 25 runs for the fourth wicket stand. At 69 for 4, Surrey was desperate for a big partnership and that is the time when Stewart Walters and Ramprakash took the initiative. A flurry of innovative boundaries from the pair calmed the nerves for Surrey but the excitement was short-lived, as the fluent Ramprakash was trapped lbw off a beautiful delivery bowled by Pedro Collins. Mark Ramprakash scored 44 runs from 71 balls. His more than an hour’s stay at crease entertained the crowd with nine muscular boundaries across the field.
The next man to lose wicket was http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Gareth-Batty-c1456 posted 26 runs for the seventh wicket partnership before Batty mistimed Murtagh to Josh Davey. Batty scored 15 runs off just nine deliveries. During his 13 minutes cameo he plundered three fours as well. Tremlett was the next man to lose the wicket. He could score only 2 runs. He was also slashed Murtagh to Dexter.
Jade Dernbach and Spriegel made a last attempt to drag their side towards a respectable score but could add only 23 runs for the ninth wicket partnership.
