Cricket Update: Glamorgan seeking Herschelle http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Gibbs-c60021 return- Managing director Colin Metson
Former county wicketkeeper and newly appointed managing director Colin Metson revealed that he has approached Herschelle Gibbs to make a return to Welsh county, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Glamorgan-c784.
South Africa’s cricket star Gibbs has had two stints at the Welsh county as an overseas player and Glamorgan seems to be keen on taking him this summer.
Alviro Petersen, the new captain of Glamorgan yesterday asked for Gibbs mobile number on the micro-blogging website Twitter and Metson confirmed that he had indeed talked to the former Proteas batsman.
“We have been in touch with his agent and that is as far as we have gone,”
Metson told the media.
He said as the player has been relieved of his South African cricket contract and if he chooses to announce retirement from International cricket, he could return to Glamorgan as a “Kolpak import.”
“Herschelle is a quality player and is available after missing out on an IPL contract,”
Metson commented on the recently held Indian Premier League auctions in which Gibbs went unsold along with other cricket veterans.
Gibbs averaged 56 in six Twenty20 innings in 2007-08 season including a superb hard-hitting 98. He agreed to play for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Yorkshire-c867 in 2010 to play Twenty20 cricket in the Friends Provident Trophy.
The prolific player however, had his international career on hold since the release of his controversial autobiography in November 2010. The book titled, “To the Point” raised quite a hue and cry amongst the Proteas cricket circuit and the media. There were
some controversial revelations about former and current South African players. Gibbs gave a detailed account on the team’s explicit escapades in foreign tours and also claimed that there were “cliques” in the team who were controlling the Proteas cricket.
However, Metson dismissed the controversies saying that the 36 year old player is a great batsman and that’s what matters for Glamorgan.
Metson also stated that the team is being revamped after the middle order players Tom Maynard and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Jamie-Dalrymple-c1658 rendered their resignations.
Metson admitted that the officials are in a fix whether to recruit Kolpak players or search the domestic market. However, he said that the new coach http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-South-Wales-c823 position of head coach, will be the key person to
make the call.
