Cricket Update: IPL 2011 misses Anil Kumble pulling out
The former Indian captain and the leg spinner expert, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Anil-Kumble-c44737 declared his retirement prior to this weekend’s Indian Premier League auction.
Kumble had been involved in cricket administration and other commitments for quite some time now and hence said that he would not be able to take part in the IPL following his commitments in administration.
Kumble was the captain for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the last two seasons of IPL, 2009 and 2010 and he was expected to do so this year’s IPL season as well but he withdrew prior to the auction because of his association with the cricket association
and relative business commitments.
"I wish to withdraw from the players auction for IPL 4 scheduled for the 8th and 9th of January 2011 in Bangalore," said the legendary leg-spinner in an IPL release.
Kumble told the press, "I have enjoyed my stint at the IPL so far and thank all concerned for the support extended."
For the auction, Kumble was among the 22 players with the highest reserved price of $4,00,000 for the IPL auction to be held in Bangalore and was not yet retained by the RCB before he withdrew himself out of the auction. He was the only player who was retained
by the Vijay Mallya owned franchise.
Kumble’s absence in the IPL would certainly be felt, been the inspiration to many youngsters. During his last two editions of the league, he took his team to the finals in 2009 and stood at the third position in 2010, not to mention the Champions League
qualification in both the years.
A tally of overall 45 wickets in the three editions of IPL goes to his name substantiating his supremacy over the shortest form of the game even. He had already retired from international cricket in 2008 staying at the top lead wicket taker for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750, 619
in Tests and 337 in the one-dayers.
He was elected as http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Karnataka-c801 State Cricket Association president last year in November defeating the serving president Maharaja Srikanta Datta Narasimharaja Wadiyar in the elections to win the race for the president post.
