Cricket Update: Ricky Ponting likely to resume Captaincy soon
According to Tim Nielsen, the coach of the team http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746, Ricky Ponting will resume the captaincy of the team as soon as he is declared fit by the medical team.
Amid the broken finger, which had been aggravated for not being treated properly, Ponting is going to miss the last Test match of the Ashes series which is going to start from 3rd of the January in Sydney. However, the Australian cricketing fans
believe that displaying a consistent poor performance against the traditional rival England in the Ashes series has cast serious doubts over the future of the player, and he might not be able to make a comeback again in the Test cricket.
But interestingly, while talking to the reporters today, Nielsen hoped for the 36-year old batsman skipper to make a comeback after doing away with the injured finger.
When asked about whether it was the last Test match the captain had participated into, the coach said,
“I wouldn’t have thought so. He’ll miss this Test match through injury and Michael (http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Clarke-c51120) has been named as his replacement while his finger recovers. I still think there’s plenty of kick in the old dog yet, so to speak.”
Nielsen further said that despite of not performing well into the Ashes, which the skipper had also admitted, he had been a tremendous leader for the team. Perhaps that was the reason that the coach was of the view that Ponting will be at the helm of the
affairs all over again.
Despite of having a fractured finger, Ponting had opted to be a part of the team in the fourth Test match, however, amid an outstanding performance, England ensured the hosts that they would retain the series.
During a re-check up, the doctors have revealed that the skipper may have to go through a surgery to get a healed-up left hand, and apparently, this was the main reason which made him miss the final match in Sydney.
While disclosing that he had a good chat with the captain last night, Nielsen said,
“With a look to what we have coming up, more problems with the finger could have meant a much longer-term concern. I think, with the medical staff, he’s made a very prudent decision with an eye to playing some good cricket for Australia again as soon as
he can.”
