Cricket Update: Sussex take control on day 2 against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Gloucestershire-c785

Sussex took control of the 4 day math at the end of 2nd day against Gloucestershire at the Castle Cricket Club Ground, in the County Championship Division Two.

Batting first after winning the toss Gloucestershire put on not a huge but decent total in the first innings, Kadeer Ali while opening the batting scored a 58 runs, but due to the overcast conditions he really had to work hard for his runs on the first day, he faced 161 balls for his 58.

Apart from that the other big contributions came from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Taylor-c92915 at number 6, he scored 89 runs from 112 balls, with 12 fours and a 6. By the time Taylor came to the crease the ball had lost most of its shine and batting had become relatively easier. He stroked his was way toward fifty in quick time and slowed down in the latter part of his innings.

J. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Lewis-c72807 also provided some able support down the order with 32 useful runs, but other than that, there was hardly anything to talk about in the Gloucestershire first innings.

http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760 got 2 and so did Jenkins.

Gloucestershire began day 2 at 286 and with just one wicket in hand and Kirby was knocked over by Arafat to end the Gloucestershire innings at 307.

Sussex did start solidly and the opening pair of Nash and Thornely looked at ease against Gloucestershire attack, with score at 34, Thornely was caught in the slips off the bowling off Hussain, he scored 7 runs from 20 balls with one four.

http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ed-Joyce-c1417 then came to the middle, and formed a good partnership alongside Nash.

The two knew that the early morning moisture was going to help the bowlers, so both refrained from big drives and let most of the balls outside the off stump go straight to Batty behind the stumps. Hussain was making the ball move both ways and was quite difficult to handle in the first session.

The pair though stuck it out and made it to the 2nd session, but soon after resumption Nash was caught in the covers by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Marshall-c74817 off the bowling of Banerjee, he was just one shy of his 50, Nash scored 49 runs from 85 balls with 7 fours.

Former http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Murray-Goodwin-c2040 then came to the middle and put on 41 runs with Joyce, before Ali caught Joyce off the bowling of Banerjee, Joyce had scored 43 runs from 88 balls with 6 fours.

Matt Prior and Goodwin then decided to take charge of the innings and looked at ease, while waiting for loose balls to slash away.

Goodwin scored 44 runs from 77 balls with 7 fours, before he was caught plum in front by Hussain for his 2nd wicket.

Matt Prior looked in good touch but could not carry on much longer, as he was caught while trying to pull one from Banerjee, Prior scored 37 runs from 62 balls, with 5 fours.

With half the side back in the Hut for 202 , Gloucestershire must have fancied their chances of keeping Sussex under 300, but Martin Jenkins and Gatting formed a solid stand for the 6th wicket and resurrected the Sussex innings, Gatting fell after scoring 24 from 53 balls with 3 fours, he was 4th victim of Banerjee.

http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Yasir-Arafat-c98241 then joined Martin Jenkins and the pair added 57 more runs before the close of play.

Sussex ended the day at 314, 7 runs ahead of Gloucestershire and still 4 wickets in hand, and with Martin Jenkins going well at 73 not out and Yasir Arafat also in good knick. If they are able to get through the first few overs in the morning session, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sussex-c852 can get a sizeable lead over Gloucestershire in the first innings.
