Cricket Update: WICB regional one-day tournament- Day 2 roundup
On the second day of the WICB regional one-day tournament, Guyana and Barbados prevailed in their matches of the day earning 4 points each to their accounts.
Guyana faced a scare from young Sagicor High Performance Centre side in a fight that went down to the final ball before the experienced Guyana sealed the victory by three runs at Kensington Park in Jamaica. In the second match of the
Day, Barbados set up a comfortable 4-wicket win over Leeward Islands at Sabina Park in Kingston with more than three overs to spare.
The High Performance Centre went off to a solid start in their chase of Guyana's 225-all out with a painstaking three-digit opening stand between http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Rajindra-Chandrika-c83596 and Kieran Powell. The 20-year-old Kieran Powell, who played two ODIs
for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760 last year – was the leading run scorer from HPC with 124-ball 72, while his opening partner Chandrika logged 51 off 86. With 173 for 3 on the board, the High Performance Centre was all set on its way to a titanic upset. However, the spin attack
of Guyana set off a crumple in the opposition line up claiming five wickets for only 34 runs. The HPC were just 10 short off the final over bowled by off-spinner Steven Jacobs, but the side could manage only six as Guyana sealed a narrow three-run win.
Guyana's total included a 101-run stand between Richard Ramdeen and skipper Ramnaresh Sarwan for the second wicket after losing Christopher Barnwell at 7. The captain slammed four sixes and an equal number of boundaries in his 79-ball
63 while Richard Ramdeen scored 46 runs from 58 deliveries with the help of four fours and two sixes. However, leg-spinner Keron Cottoy scythed through the middle order of Guyana, picking up four wickets including the wickets of centurion partners Sarwan and
Ramdeen besides http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Jacobs-c65213 then took the charge ensuring a reasonable total for Guyana to defend.
In the second clash of the day played at the Sabina Park, fifties struck by Kirk Edwards and Ryan Hinds bagged Barbados a four-wicket win over Leeward Islands. The whirlwind 85 struck by the Leeward captain Wilden Cornwall went in
vain as Barbados chased down the 240-run target in the 47th over with four wickets still in reserve.
Tight bowling from Barbados bowlers had Leeward reeling at 91 for 4 by the 30th over. The left-arm spinner’s duo, Sulieman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Benn-c47745 and Ryan Hinds, claimed 5 wickets for 55. Opener Montcin Hodge tested 96 balls to play a patient
knock of 39 runs before debutant Marlon Graham sent him back in the 30th over.
Hodge’s dismissal brought skipper Wilden Cornwall to the crease that went on to plunder eight muscular boundaries and six lofty sixes in his hurricane 85 that came from just 59 balls. He took a liking to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Graham-c60529, looting him for four
consecutive sixes in an over that went for 30.
Cornwall’s assault was well-complimented by all-rounder Omari Banks as the pair shared 127-run stand from just 95 balls. However, the duo fell within four balls of each other, and the remaining line-up managed only 19 from the last
27 balls.
Despite a half-century from skipper Hinds, Barbados had slumped to 182-6 at one stage, as the Leeward’s offspinner Justin Athanaze picked up 3 for 44. However, the chase was anchored by Edwards who finished unbeaten for 68. Late cameos
from Carlo Morris and Dwayne Smith helped their side home with 20 balls to spare.
