Cricket Update: Women’s European Championship- Ireland defeated Netherlands by three wickets
Ireland’s three wickets victory over Netherlands women in a Women’s European Championship clash at New Williamfield No1 Oval, Stirling on Wednesday, 11th August earned it a progress to the next stage of the World Cup qualifying rounds. While chasing below par 50-0vers, Dutch total of 125 for 9, the Irish Women had a major scare when the batting line-up crumbled to 85-7 but an eighth wicket stand of 37 runs between experienced Isobel Joyce and Louise McCarthy bagged Ireland three wickets victory with plenty of overs to spare.
Out of sorts, Netherlands indebted to Captain Helmien Rambaldo’s 22, posted a below par 50 overs total of 125 runs for 9. The disciplined Ireland attack led by Louise McCarty and Jill Whelan did not allow the Dutch bowling line-up break free throughout the innings. Both Louise McCarty and Jill Whelan shared two wickets each, while Heather Whelan, Ciara Metcalfe, Laura Delany and Isobel Joyce all took one wicket apiece. In reply, Ireland Women got off to a shoddy start and were soon reeling at 76 for 6. The recovery was led by Isobel Joyce, who shared an eighth wicket partnership of 37 runs with Louise McCarty – with the bulk coming from the former – as the Ireland was taken home by two wides bowled by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mandy-Kornet-c74130.
On an overcast day, the Irish skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Heather-Whelan-c62138 had no hesitation in offering the Dutch counterpart to bat first.  The Netherlands Women, after being put into bat first, got off to an aggressive start at the cost of opening wickets. Both the opening partners Carlijn de Groot and the wicketkeeper Violet Wattenberg left in successive overs scoring 6 and 7 runs respectively. De Groot squandered her wicket carelessly on the first ball of fifth over when she was beaten by Jill Whelan’s throw. Groot’s six runs from 11 balls contained a boundary as well.
The Dutch captain, Helmien Rambaldo and Wattenberg added 19 runs to the scorecard for the second wicket partnership before the later, struggling at the crease, followed her opening partner de Groot. The wicketkeeper batsman Violet Wattenberg departed on the last ball of sixth over slashing Jill Whelan to Scott-Hayward. Wattenberg’s 42-ball innings added only 7 runs to the team’s total. The next ten overs could amass only 8 runs. Caroline Salomons was bowled by Laura Delany in the 16th over leaving Netherlands 38 for 3 on the board. Salomons, after facing 10 balls, scored only 4 runs.
Rambaldo and Marijn Nijman shared a partnership of 22 runs for the fourth wicket stand. That became 60 for 4 when the fluent captain Rambaldo mistimed Ciara http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Netherlands-c753 kept on losing wickets at regular intervals. Alongside the skipper Rambaldo, only Esther Lanser, Denise Henneama and Nijman could enter double figures. The Irish attack was quite generous with extras with a final tally of 34 containing 30 wides with 20 coming from Jill Whelan and Laura Delany sharing 10 each.
Ireland’s run chase went off to a bad start losing six wickets with only 76 on the board. Eimear Richardson, despite losing her opening partner Laura Delany in the second over, played a responsible innings of 21 off 24 before Lanser bowled her in the seventh wickets. 23 minutes stay at crease earned http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Richardson-c85395 three well-timed boundaries.
With the wickets clattering at the other end, Emma Beamish played a patient innings of 18 runs from 66 balls. Beamish departed in the 23rd over mistiming de Lange to Rambaldo followed back by Kim Garth in the next over leaving behind Ireland Women struggling at 76 for 6. The experienced Isobel Joyce led the recovery hitting three boundaries in her unbeaten 44-ball 36. Joyce’s assault was well supported by McCarty, who kept the other end taking singles. The http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ireland-c751 team was taken home on the first ball of the 40th over with three wickets intact.
