Cricket: Warwickshire defeat Yorkshire to reach Friends Provident T20 quarter-finals
Warwickshire made it through to the quarter finals of the Friends Provident T20 tournament with a nerve jangling 14-run win against Yorkshire at Edgbaston, Birmingham yesterday. Keith Barker’s match hat-trick made 146 runs a formidable target for the visitors. The hat-trick came in the last over of the match when both Clint McKay and Richard Pyrah edged to Rikki Clarke standing at long off while David Wainwright was bowled by the left-arm pacer.

Though the leg spinner Tahir Imran brought a major breakthrough for his team in 14.3 overs, when he sacked http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Jonathan-Bairstow-c1727 also lost his wicket to the spinner, as he was stumped by Tim Ambrose off a slow delivery.
In the 14th over when Yorkshire was 93 for 5 on the board, the match was not out of their hands but Rudolph’s wicket took the game from their hands for the first time and they could not take it back as the wickets kept on falling at regular intervals. Though all-rounder Clint McKay, who came at No. 9 position, tried to bring his side out of the woods by hitting two sixes off seamer Steffan Pilot and Carter but it was too late and the visitors were left with no way back. McKay’s 20 runs off just 12 balls could not save his side from an eighth defeat in the last fourteen games. Even if they won the match against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Nottinghamshire-c826 and Derbyshire would not have let them qualify for the next stage from the North Group.
Earlier, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Clarke-c51120, who recently scored a hundred at Headingley, targeted Yorkshire bowlers and scored his highest (39) of the season. His 29 balls innings also included three sixes and two boundaries.
After his dismissal in 18.2 overs, Chris Woakes lit up the dying overs. His unbeaten 27 from 12 balls included two sixes smashed to Richard Pyrah.
The middle phase of the game was absolutely in favour of Yorkshire when Steven Peterson broke the vigorous opening partnership. Wainwright, in his first T20 of the summer, supported him taking three wickets off just 32 runs. Peterson also took three wickets conceding 25 runs.
Keith Barker’s last over hat-trick earned him the man-of-the match award. Warwickshire will now face http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Worcestershire-c866 at Birmingham tomorrow, July 16.
