Cricket in Sri Lanka comes under murderous crisis after Kumar Sangakkara’s Spirit of Cricket speech – Cricket News Update
The former http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 skipper, Kumar Sangakkara’s anti-administration remarks have hit another severe blow to the already tumultuous Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), intensifying the crisis and fueling the tussle between political and cricket authorities of the country.
In his hour-long speech, at the MCC Spirit of Cricket-Cowdrey Lecture, in London, Sangakkara came hard on the heinous http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bond-c48220 between the political pundits and sports administration of Sri Lanka.
In clear and daring tone, he stated, “The instability of our administration is a huge stumbling block to the rapid face-change that we need (in the national team).”
Sangakkara’s outbursts are being welcomed by the anti-government Tamil Tigers community of Sri Lanka. The Tigers are up to protest against Team Sri Lanka’s ongoing and forthcoming cricket campaigns at the International level.
A sports journalist of Sri Lanka is reported as saying, “It is not easy for anyone to salvage Sri Lanka Cricket in the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Short-c90107 term. Corruption and mismanagement are so deep-seated, it will take years to put it right."
On the other hand, the sports ministry has ordered a probe into Sangakkara’s comments and is contemplating action against him as he thinks that the former skipper has shown sheer irresponsibility by speaking publically despite being a contracted player.
The ministry has already dissolved the entire administration of the SLC following a number of corruption scandals and managerial problems inside the board.
Politics and cricket have always been at odds in Sri Lanka but the tension has worsened a lot in the backdrop of Team Sri Lanka’s failure in the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625 Cricket World Cup 2011.
Having lost the World Cup final to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750, the then captain, Sangakkara, and the entire selection committee of the SLC resigned. Following this issue, the board authorities came at loggers head with the political masters on the point of appointment of new
selectors.
Adding insult to injury, the newly formed Sri Lankan Premier League’s inaugural tournament has been delayed due to financial crisis.
In this bleak situation, the sport in Sri Lanka seems to be on a sinking boat and analysts suggest that the predicaments will cause many hurdles in the way of development of cricket in the Asian nation.
