What do you think of Cricket in the United Kingdom. Is it as popular as it is in Pakistan, India, and Australia. I live in the United States, so, like, I wouldnt know.Would English people know some of the figures in their Cricket team if I went up to random people and asked them that, even if they are not big fans of Cricket??????

  1. Cricket here is not as much followed as it is in India and Pakistan in which they consider it a religion but is a well known form of sport, especially since the 2005 Ashes series.

people know a bit about cricket even if theyre not fans of the game, but its not too familiar with everyone in the UK

  2. Cricket here in England has declined at club level over the past 30 years and I think a combination of two things is responsible:

    1) The domination of football (soccer) - there is so much money in it and the season is virtually endless nowadays so it is on TV all year round;

    2) Cricket facilities in schools were virtually halved when the government of the 1980s declared school cricket fields "surplus school land" and sold much of it to housing developers (who were big donors to the governing party).

  3. No. It is not our main sport - soccer is, and we are not good at that either. In Bangledash, India, and even some parts of the Caribbean many kids (of all classes) play cricket as their first sport. I don't think that is the case in the UK.

  4. I would say cricket is bigger here in Aus than in England.

Most of us could name all our players and a lot of players from the other countries teams.

I would say only India would be more interested in cricket than us and probably by a long long way.

90% of the questions and answers on here are from Indian supporters.

They just don't have any other sports that come close.

    England has Soccer

We have Aussie Rules, Rugby League and Rugby Union.

  5. Not as popular as in the sub continent or even Australia, most people over here would struggle to name quarter of the players in the england team let alone the latest scores etc. We can't even watch it on TV without a SKY subscription.

  6. No. It is not our main sport - soccer is~

  7. is second sport

  8. The Ashes of 2005 had everyone watching, but usually it's a smaller section of the public.

Most of the games I have been to this year have had big crowds though, it's very popular live.

  9. the game of cricket developed in england around 500 hundred years ago in pak, india is an example when british left in 1947 the aristocratic people copied the british and retained this game

  10. I think it is as popular. The media would like to tell you otherwise but, that is a mistake.

Because cricket hasn't been on mainstream telly and because of the domination of football, the public would recognise cricket less than they used to.

In India and Pakistan one day cricket is very big, whereas here we are more interested in test cricket.

Cricket is bigger in England than it is in Australia, but we can't challenge the interest in Pakistan where it is the national sport.

Most Englishmen would recognise regulars Vaughan, Flintoff and Pieterson, the other players have changed a lot. There are a few older players who are extremely well known, such as Beefy Botham and Geof Boycott. Phil Tufnell, Darren Gough and Mark Ramprakash have all gained fame through reality T.V. shows

20:20 cricket is going to revolutionise world cricket. It has brought in many new fans, lots of new money and will make the game accessible in more countries.
