Cricket news- Sri Lanka and India agree no UDRS in upcoming Test Series

The aim of the Umpire Decision Review System is to eliminate umpire errors from Test Cricket so as to make the game more fair, but since its implementation in 2008 the UDRS has faced criticism. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750, they were not happy to have it.”

The International Cricket Council announced in its annual conference, “One of the decisions is that the host member would determine whether to use DRS in home Test series (following consultation with the visiting country).” At first the hosts, Sri Lanka did not agree with India’s refusal to use the DRS, but then eventually, following the ICC’s rules decided that they would agree not to use the DRS.

In the same fixture almost exactly a year ago, the Sri Lankans managed to use the UDRS to their advantage much more efficiently than the Indians. The most controversial decision under the UDRS to date is the first one under which a batsman was given out by the third umpire, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Muttiah-Muralitharan-c78157’s ball struck Sehwag on the back leg after brushing on the front pad, umpire Mark Benson turned down the appeal but then the review was sought. It was unfortunate that the ball tracking device did not detect the deflection and Benson had to reverse his decision.

Sri Lanka made some 11 successful reviews compared to just one that India made, Sri Lanka won the series 2-1, but things look to be different this time around, now that the UDRS is not being used. After the tour, India’s http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mahendra-Singh-Dhoni-c73820 said how the UDRS had cost his side “over 500 runs and a lot of wickets.”  He was disappointed that the inefficient system had cost his side the series and what further frustrated him was the fact that the UDRS was being used in other series being played elsewhere.

Ranatunga was asked if the absence of the UDRS will affect the performance and more importantly the result of the series, to which he replied, "Definitely it will be a disadvantage. Not only for Sri Lanka, it's a disadvantage for India as well. It's a disadvantage for all the players." However, one doubts as to how much of a disadvantage it will be to India, who felt cheated by the review system and will not miss it at all. In fact since the 2008 series loss to Sri Lanka, India have not played in a single Test match that has used the UDRS.

Sachin Tendulkar, who is said to be one of the greatest batsmen of all time, said he was not too impressed with the UDRS. He felt that the inadequate technology got in the way of making the correct decision and instead of helping the umpire, the review system created more confusion and complications.
