  1. The zoo keeper is correct.  Your cricket problem is stemming from the exterior of the home.  Check your thresholds and windows to insure proper sealing.  Typically crickets won't last very long inside your home due to their diet.  Searching them out with a good flashlight and can of insecticide will take care of the problem.  You may want to treat the perimeter of your house, especially the area where you have flower beds, with a residual insecticide labeled for crickets.  Sounds like you have the "black cricket" variety and those can be a true nuisance.

  2. They could be getting in through a gap in a window, under a door, etc. Are they the common black field crickets?

Check all of your windows, doors and seals around and in your home (including the garage) to make sure everything's a tight fit and secure.

The only way I know how to get them out is to actually catch them. Try turning off the lights and then using a flashlight to locate them when they chirp. Good luck. :)
