Crickets or cicadas?

At night (even at evening time), whenever I past by some bushes or tall grass areas, there's this insect sound, it's obvious that it's either one of these insects, but I could never figure out which one it is. I've heard that cicadas only make noises during the day and evening time, so does that mean those noises from the bushes or so are from the crickets?

  1. They're probably crickets I can't remember ever hearing a cicada at night

cicadas usually make more of a buzzing sound and crickets chirp

  2. most likely crickets cicadas come every 13 or 17 years

  3. no there are cicadas that come out annually as well as the 13 year and 17 year cicadas. but cicadas will usually be out calling in the trees during the day, it seems too like they are most active during the hottest part of the day for some reason. if it is dark out you are almost definitely hearing crickets or other little night crawlies in the bushes.
