lets say ive never been to greece and i would love to go. so if i stay at a hotel in a non tourist area would it be OK to stay in a non tourist town or i should be worried like over here in USA?

i mean, are there any social groups or towns that are prohibited to walk by? ex: chavs in UK.

i know that in every country there is something bad, but then what places should i avoid in greece?

and how is the crime rate compared to USA?

  1. Compare to the US, very low. And the highest crime rates are actually in tourist areas, by other tourists. You can go basically anywhere you want, there are a couple of rules. In Brazil tourists are told not to dress well, I'm telling you in Greece, don't go overboard, but dress nicely. You will get better treatment in general. And be nice to people. I used to walk in Omonia, at 3 am and talk to homeless people. Buy them a coffeee, a meal. I heard amazing stories. I had a stroke in 2003, and moved to Crete, and I really missed doing that.

  2. honestly, the states has the worst crime rate compared to Greece.  Greece has pickpocketing or the occasional scam when you book a room, rent a car, etc.  you just have to be alert.  if you still feel uncertain, book a tour group instead.

  3. Greece's crime rate is the lowest in Europe and as i know in the lowest of the world

noone is prohibited to walk nowhere.

bust some places are more dangerous anyways

if you walk to ermou street at the center of Athens be care of your wallet.

and be care at night,at victoria ,omonoia etc.

  4. Greece is considered a very safe place to live, study and travel.  I live in Thessaloniki, which is a big, multinational city and l had no problems walking in the streets at 02:00. I will be honest, Of course there are points in Thessaloniki that you are not supposed to be there late at ight..this is the area of Vardaris - Monastiriou - Giannitson. But still there is no reason for you to be there, there is nothing to see, nothing to do etc. But still it happened more than once to pass the area at night and l had not problem. For Athens l hope other users will give you a clue.

As far as it concerns the islands the situation is extremely different. After all in the islands much less people live there and the sociaty is still pure.

  5. Greece has reportently the lowest crime rate in Europe.
