  1. Crime in Puerto Rico is  Too general...crime  in Big cities  are Just like  crime  in New York  or Miami...

  2. From my experience. I have most of my family living in PR and NOONE, has been a victim of a crime. No robberies, carjacking, beatings, killing. It has not happen to anyone.

...But, the few family members that live here in the United States have witness or been a victim of robberies, carjacking and random beating. So far no killings, thank God.

I do not understand why PR has that reputation.

  3. No matter where you go, stupid people will always tell you that neighborhoods full of brown skinned, working class people, are "dangerous" or "sketchy."  No need to ever worry, just use common sense in bad areas.

  4. its not like that. i live in bayamon PR and ive been to la perla and no one has done anything to me, ive have walked in the darkest streets and im still alive, so is not as bad as people say, its just myths, there are worst and a lot of places who kill people just for the fun of it. I work near a caserio (projects) and people say good morning to me all the time, not even knowing who I am. what people really need to be alert about PR is that drug dealers love to steal whatever you leave lying around, specially inside the cars, so make sure that whoever carries a purse, never leave it in the carts when shopping, cause you wont see it again! lol

  5. What you say is so true. I lived in Cata~o all my life, walk around very late at night and ever in my life was I in any kind of trouble. If you ask a puertorican about my town, lots of them will say wow!!!!!!!!. But I never mess with no crazy things, so I felt always save. People is talking for what they hear and not what they experience. My whole family live there and they are fine. I also went to a public school in the "barrio" or the "hood" and graduate with honors and so does more of my class-mates. You're calm and good you'll be safe. Be an animal and stupid and you'll get in the worse trouble of your life, but I see that every where. This IMACHEFF is talking for what he sees in youtube, look at the sic. pic on his profile and you'll see what kinds of video he looks for on that site.Let him say what ever he want. I personally think hi's just ignorant, sick and rotten.

  6. What you say is correct. It is whom you are with, where you are and what you are doing and the hour.  You do not go to dangerous places at late hours not with your family or girfriend.

Here the crime is like many place. Bank robberiers, breaking and entering, even the latest is stealing the school childrends accumalitive files from the principals office to creat false ID.

When you go out you go in groups or in pairs.  Never, ever let the windows down at night at stop lights. The addicts on the corners will go car to car to ask for money and some will stick their hands through the window.  I do not support drugs so I don't give them a penny.  When shopping, instead of carrying all bags seperate, what I do is take a hand bag that will carry what I will buy and as I buy I put the bags in there so as to carry one bag. As for the money, put it in a pocket in the pants, shirt or jacket. In my purse I do not carry the money. ATM cards are safer, by the way DO NOT USE ATMS AT NIGHT, a police woman was at an ATM here on Thursday evening and she go jumped by a stranger who took here money on hand and made her withdraw her account. So ATMs are to be used early if on the street or if at night , then inside the store of the mall where many people are.

Here crime is no exception.  Always be on the guard.

  7. People always try to minimize the drug fueled violence which has griped Puerto Rico for so many years. It is disingenious and a outright lie to tell a tourist that Puerto Rico is safe "just like the United States." Let me assure you, it is nothing like the US. In this respect, it's more like Beirut.

Puerto Rico has a population the same as the City of Los Angeles, California, but has a murder rate several times higher. The murder rate is more than double of the US average of all fifty states. Over the same amount of time, the number of people murdered in Puerto Rico, is almost double the number of US Soldiers killed in Iraq.

The sad thing is that it's dangerous all over the island.

Of course - DUH! - you should stay away from public housing projects. Unfortunately it's impossible to avoid them in the metropolitan area, especially in the area of Old San Juan, which actually has two. One is within walking distance of the Cruise ship terminal and there are constant problems with tourists getting into trouble.

There is another one close to the entrance of the spanish fort. It's actually an illegal squatter shanty town known as La Perla, it's never been recognised officially by the municipality, because drugs are sold there openly and shootings are common occurances. The crime is so bad and so consistently violent, that even the police do not venture or patrol in there. It's exactly like the wild west, lawless and dangerous. The first video on the "sources" list below, shows what happens in La Perla. This happened in broad daylight, within a few hundred feet of the entrance to the Fort. More frightening is that it was filmed by the Police, who did absolutely nothing to intervene. That's the reality of crime in Puerto Rico.

There's another high crime spot on the far end of Isla Verde, known as Ocean city, which is a bizarre mix of ocean front properties, ringed by several public housing projects. There are hundreds of places that I could point out throughout the island, like Bayamon, most of Carolina, Pineros, but honestly there is no single "worst" part, it's dangerous all over the island.

If that wasn't bad enough, there is a very large population of homeless or street people. No matter where you go, nor a what time of day, you will be hassled for money constantly.

  8. According to the latest FBI study, here is the link: http://www.statemaster.com/graph/cri_mur...

Puerto Rico is number 6 among US jurisdictions in murder and manslaughter.

The first five are:  California, Texas, Florida, New York and Illinois.  These are really big states in terms of population, and Puerto Rico, with just 4,000,000 inhabitants is number 6.  You decide whether living in Puerto Rico is dangerous or not based on the cold facts, not on just perceptions.
