  1. After the United States gained the Philippines from Spain in 1898 a war broke out in which Filipinos attempted to gain independence. The U.S. military crushed the rebellion using appalling violence. 200,000 to over 1 million Filipino civilians perished in the Philippine-American War (1899 - 1902). In 1895, the population was 9 million. In 1905 the population was only 8 million. This remains one of the most obscure conflicts in American history, despite the fact that more Americans were killed in the Philippine-American War than in Iraq, Afghanistan, or the Gulf War.

Atrocities committed against the Philippines by the U.S. military include burning entire towns and villages in scorched earth campaigns, torture and murder of prisoners, and relocation of civilians to concentration camps. Commanders encouraged soldiers to kill prisoners and sometimes even civilians including women and children. Some historians contend that this was genocide.

In November 1901, the Manila correspondent of the Philadelphia Ledger reported:"The present war is no bloodless, opera bouffe engagement; our men have been relentless, have killed to exterminate men, women, children, prisoners and captives, active insurgents and suspected people from lads of ten up, the idea prevailing that the Filipino as such was little better than a dog...."
