Question:

Criminal background check?

I'm trying to find a new apartment. A lot of places are doing criminal background checks. When I was a teenager, I was arrested and charged with two felonies, but the chargers were dropped. When a background check is done, it keeps showing up either as convictions or its not clear whether it was a conviction or just a charge. How can I get documentation showing that I was never convicted of a felony?

  1. Go to the courthouse (in the county where the offense took place) and ask for documents that indicate the record was dropped - ask for a letter of clearance.

  2. write to the jurisdiction where the records are held.  they will tell you what is necessary to take care of this.

    good luck!

  3. This is a problem because apartment complexes are only utilizing databases.  You are entitled to know the name of the database company that conducted the check on you.  I would suggest you mail every company you can the letter of dismissal from the court and require they update their records.
