Criminal street gangs?

Question

I am taking a class on street gangs in California... I found some graffiti from the nortenos ( it was XIV written on a wall). For my homework i have to put what makes a gang a criminal street gang. Can anyone give me facts and resources to why the Nortenos are considered a criminal street gang.

you know there is this show that comes on the history channel called "Gangland" and they profile different gangs every week, and there was an episode on nortenos, try going to the history channel's website and seeing if you can watch the episode on their website or even youtube may have it, i would think they are a street gang because of the structure and the way their gang is set up as well as all the different crimes they commit, the nortenos are pretty d**n cold blooded from what i have seen and heard, anyways i hope this helped :)

Bring a video camera and drive thru a Norteno controlled neighborhood wearing the Suenos colors. Then you will see the meaning of a criminal gang in action on tape.

In order to truly understand street gangs, study immigration, land (property rights), and the structure of our Constitution.  This country was founded on property rights and when those property rights are infringed, or when people lack available resources for self expression, there will always be the rise of violence.  I apologize that I do not have information on the Nortenos, but I agree with the other comment about interviewing a member.  They will tell you that economics plays a very large part in the proliferation of street gangs.  When members of our communities are shut out of opportunities from education, jobs, etc...the choice towards following a street gang seem appealing.  Stanley "Tookie" Williams, founder of the Crips said that his gang formed to protect themselves from other groups who were bullying in his neighborhood.  Innocent enough, but when our country started to trade with foreign nations to import narcotics, these drugs went directly into inner city neighborhoods to control minorities.
