Crimsons are hopeful for better performance in next season: Hockey News
Harvard field hockey could manage to win only one out of its next 15 matches, despite the fact it had started the year with two consecutive victories. It ended up its yearly campaign with three victories out of 17 contests and one out of seven matches in
the Ivy League.
The performance of Harvard field hockey has been unsatisfactory since the last six seasons from 2004 to onwards till now. Crimsons, Harvard field hockey, have remained unsuccessful in winning half of their games over this tenure.
Carly Dickson, the junior co-captain of Crimsons stated that the season was unexpectedly not good for them as they had a lot of injuries and as a result, a small team during the entire year.
However there were lots of positive things for Harvard field hockey during this season as Dickson was selected in the All-Ivy second team by dint of her brilliant performance throughout the year.
Crimsons had started their season in a dominant style by winning first two games quite convincingly. They defeated Holy Cross by 6-1 and Bryant by 5-2 at their home field during the first week of September. But as they travelled to Vermont and New Hampshire,
the whole scenario changed in the opposite direction with three losses on a straight and only two goals for them in these matches.
The rest of the season was also with the same performance on the part of Crimsons. They finished at the seventh place in every aspect of the game - the shots, goals scored and goal difference in the Ivy League.
“Having such a small team limited the number of substitutions we could make and really put our fitness to the test. We proved that we were in good enough shape to play 60 minutes, but sometimes not having the extra burst limited our offensive opportunities,”
Carly Dickson stated about their injury problems.
For the Crimsons, the game of the year was in Ivy League, played on September 25, at Penn. It was the sole victory for Crimsons in the League with goals from Dickson and McGillivray and it also proved the last of the season before they finished the year
facing nine defeats in a row.
Having finished disappointedly, the coach of Harvard, Sue Caples has put into practice some fresh training method in the off-season. So the future of Crimsons keeps on shining as there is a class of talented guys that will be in the campus in near future.
“In the winter, when we’re usually confined to the weight room and conditioning because of the snow, we played indoor field hockey for the first time and it really helps our defending and first touch on the ball,” Dickson further added.
The Crimsons also adopted a new offensive system that oriented some positive sequences in two unofficial tournaments which were played during the spring season against the teams from around the Boston. This addition to the confidence and sanguinity of the
team, the more better and hopeful results can be viewed from the team in the next season. Although three of their senior members will not be there for the next season.
Dickson stated her views that it is not always good to play without senior players, but they are quite hopeful for better results from the fresh young players.
