Cristian Săpunaru on the verge of Porto exit – Portuguese Primeira Liga Update
If reports in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Portugal-c2984 are to be believed, Porto defender Cristian Săpunaru is reportedly set to be shown the door as he has become surplus to requirements.
The Romanian International was integral to his side’s conquest on the domestic and European fronts and was a regular in all the matches. Mainly occupying the role of a wingback, he has occasionally been drafted into the centre-back position as well.
Despite being a strong presence in the starting XI last season, he is now destined to part ways with the clubs as he is not included in Vitor Pereira’s plans for the next campaign.
The 27-year-old arrived from Rapid Bucureşti in 2008 for a fee of €2.5 million, bringing along high expectations. Although lived up to his potential by cementing a berth in the team in his debut campaign, he was loaned out to his former club as he suffered
a lengthy ban in the Portuguese league following his antics on the field.
After returning from his spell, he worked under Andre Villas-Boas, who seemingly got the best out of Săpunaru. The defender took to the pitch more than 40 times for the Portistas. However, under the new management of Vitor Pereira, who employs different
tactics than his predecessor, he looks certain to join a new club.
Although he may be on the verge of a move, it has not diminished the quality and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Romania-c2990 have expressed their interest on luring the player back
to his homeland, the player may favour an offer from http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Italy-c2926 in order to further his career.
A bid in the region of €25 million is expected to confirm his signature but the Dragons are supposedly are ready to accept proposals less than their evaluation of the former Naţional Bucureşti man.
With the prospect of acquiring a proven defender with not only domestic but International experience, it is an excellent opportunities for teams to add quality in their ranks. But it remains to be seen whether Săpunaru is also willing to move from the Dragao,
where he won a historic quadruple last season.
