Cristiano Ronaldo: Madrid’s Main Man
Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the best players in the World, right now, and is supposed to be the biggest goal-scoring machine in the World. In recent years, he has gained so much popularity that only David Beckham can surpass his popularity graph, in the World of Football. He is the player who is always making the news and is always under discussion on all forums.
Cristiano Ronaldo joined Manchester United from Sporting Lisbon, in 2003. Since then he has gained popularity in football circles, due to his game, his finishing and his behaviour. Cristiano Ronaldo had an amazing career at Manchester United, as he won three league titles, an FA Cup title, a Carling Cup title and the Champions League.
The real season was the 2007-2008 Season, in which he scored an amazing 42 goals in all competitions, as Manchester United won the Champions League and the English Premier League title. This season was marked by excellent performances by Cristiano Ronaldo, who emerged as a prolific goal-scorer. Also, his abilities to take free kicks blossomed in that particular season, which made him one of the most complete players in the World. Due to his amazing performances, Cristiano Ronaldo was the FIFA Player of the Year in 2008.
The 2008-2009 Season was again very good for the winger, but he could not repeat his brilliant performances from the last season. Despite scoring 18 goals in the English Premier League, he was still the top scorer in the competition. Manchester United won the EPL again, while they made it to their second consecutive finals in the Champions League. However, this time, they were beaten by the exquisite Barcelona side, but Cristiano Ronaldo had made his mark, nonetheless.
Due to his great talent, he was eagerly chased by the Real Madrid management. The recent surge of Barcelona led Real Madrid to a stage where they were eager to get Cristiano Ronaldo. They paid a hefty amount of £80 million, in order to get their hands on the winger. Also, Cristiano Ronaldo always wanted to play at Bernabeu and he got his chance in the last season. Ronaldo’s season was great at the new club, as he scored 26 goals in just 29 league matches, while he scored 7 goals in 6 Champions League matches.
Also, he had an amazing 7 assists in La Liga, but unfortunately Real Madrid did not win anything. Instead, they suffered humiliation on different fronts, as they were thrown out of the Copa Del Ray by a third division team. Also, they could not go far in the Champions League, as they were eliminated by Lyon in the first knock-out stage. In La Liga, Madrid lost both their fixtures against their archrivals Barcelona, while Lionel Messi outplayed every single player in the Madrid’s side.
Ronaldo had an opportunity to regain some of his lost pride in the recent FIFA World Cup in South Africa. But, the forward did not do well, as he generally failed to show any form throughout the tournament. Also, he failed to convert any free kicks into goals, although he is was supposedly the most talented free-kick taker in the World.
The next season of Cristiano Ronaldo would come under Jose Mourinho, who is famous for his defensive style of play. Under Mourinho, there is a big chance that Cristiano Ronaldo would be delegated more responsibility upfront. The Madrid’s archrivals, Barcelona have already strengthened their squad from last season, and are looking more threatening than ever before.
The only change that Madrid has gotten is the introduction of Jose Mourinho, while their squad is largely the same. Cristiano Ronaldo is their key man and he would be responsible for the success of Real Madrid in the next season.
