Cristiano Ronaldo says La Liga is no longer a two-horse race
Real Madrid attacker Cristiano Ronaldo has claimed that the race for the La Liga title now involves more than just two teams.
The Primera Division has been dominated by Madrid and Barcelona for several years, with the last two league titles being won by the Catalan giants. However, the sides’ rule over Spanish football is under threat with both Valencia and Villarreal ahead of
them in the standings.
As a result, Ronaldo believes that Jose Mourinho’s men need to be concerned about sides other than Barcelona this season.
He told Spanish daily newspaper Marca that, “Valencia are top of the standings, we need to worry not only about Barcelona this season and must keep working hard to continue fighting for the championship.”
Ronaldo added that he was pleased to have rediscovered his scoring touch (he scored two against Deportivo de la Coruna in a 6-1 thiumping last weekend) and believes that Madrid is beginning to show their true ability.
He said that, “The goals are giving me confidence — I'm getting better and well prepared to help the team. [Jose] Mourinho is pushing everyone in the same direction and only together can we do something good.”
Looking to shine for Portugal
Meanwhile, the winger is looking to build on a good run of form at the Bernebau when he lines up for the Portugal national team in a UEFA 2012 European Football Championship qualifying match on Friday night, October 8.
Portugal is in a transition phase, with Paulo Bento set to take charge of his first matches — against Denmark and Iceland — following the sacking of Carlos Queiroz. They suffered defeat at the hands of Norway in a previous qualifier, while a point against
Cyprus in a 4-4 draw put them behind three of their opponents in the group.
Rolando said that, “We are looking forward to getting a win on Friday, we are in a difficult situation, but we can prevail.”
